Methodology for evaluating preventing extremism work

Radical Middle Way - Project Evaluation RMW(PDF)
There are clearly challenges in evaluating the impact of work in this field - when knowledge of the key drivers of radicalisation are contested and not yet well understood. We have developed an approach which is pragmatic, tailored to the specific objectives of an organisation but also rooted in robust research practice. Our methodology uses a combination of data sources, including desk research, review of operational reports, feedback from participants and interviews with partners and target audiences and has the potential to evolve as our collective understanding of factors influencing extremism improve. Key areas of focus are:
Effectiveness of delivery – did the intervention reach it’s target audience and deliver what was intended? Were the management arrangements appropriate and effective?
Impact – Is the desired impact clear? Is the design of the project likely to achieve the desired impact? Is there evidence that the desired impact has been achieved? We develop criteria specific to the project and use a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods appropriate to the target audience to gather evidence to enable an assessment to be made. Ideally we make a comparison of attitudes and behaviour before and after the intervention and over time.
Improvement – how can the project do better? We make recommendations for the future.
